Phantogram Lights Up Toronto Amidst Winter Storm
february 12, 2025 - toronto, canada
In the midst of a blistering winter storm with over a foot in anticipated snowfall in the evening, fans of Phantogram happily braved the weather on the way to and from Toronto’s Danforth Music Hall for a lively night filled with the hypnotizing energy of the electro-pop duo. Made up of childhood friends Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter, Phantogram and their backing band are greeted on stage with a chorus of cheers as you can feel the excitement travel through the room.
Having previously been described as electronic rock, dream pop, electronica, trip pop, and psychedelic pop, Phantogram transcends genre, as their sound is as dreamy as it is disorienting. Looking completely comfortable on stage, Phantogram has little need for big production or showy tricks as the music and flashing lights completely pulls the audience into the world they have built through their music.
Opening the night with “Jealousy”, the leading track off of their latest album, Memory of a Day, the duo sets the tone early as they both start the night off looking out over the audience from the top of the riser with their guitars. Both Barthel and Carter take turns putting the guitars down for different songs throughout the show, offering a different twist on each new track in the setlist.
Newer songs such as “Attaway” and “It Wasn’t Meant To Be”, which were released in October 2024 as part of the Memory of a Day record are met with the same cheering and singing along as older fan favourites like “Black Out Days”, with the dedication and admiration of fans apparent throughout the audience. Phantogram keeps the energy and atmosphere light through the show, easily welcoming everyone into the atmosphere they have created for themselves and their fans.
With the dark stage and colourful lights perfectly setting the mood to match the dreamy daze of Phantograms music, this is a beautiful show. Catch Phantogram as they continue on the second half of their Running Through Colors tour from now until the end of February. Stream Memory of a Day, out now on all streaming platforms.
